Chiron the centaur from Greek mythology is the archetypal mentor and is used as a prototype in almost every modern story depicting a mentor.
Unlike most centaurs in Greek mythology, Chiron was kind, calm and respected. He was the teacher of many Greek heroes such as Hercules, Jason, Perseus and Theseus. He was highly revered among the gods as a teacher and a tutor as a well-respectable father-figure as he tried to raise many of the young heroes from infancy.
Chiron was seen as the archetypal mentor as he helped guide the heroes of Greek mythology through life and helped prepare them for any danger they would face. When he died, Zeus rewarded him with the highest honour he could bestow, he transformed him into the zodiac Sagittarius.
