The Animatic (story breakdown)

The entirety of the animatic was created by myself, with some consultation with the rest of the group. My reasoning behind the shots is listed below:

Scene 1: Opening establishing shot.
Scene 1: Opening establishing shot.

This shot establishes all the conflict that exists within the story. First we see the silhouette of a city far in the distance along a long, dusty road. Suddenly, a train blocks the path. We pan out to see Maxine waiting patiently for this obstacle to pass so she can reach her destination. The scene finishes with our loud, obnoxious antagonist coming roaring into the scene in his large muscle car. To conclude, this gives a perfect general overview of the entire plot and establishes the conflict from the get go.

Scene 2: Character introductory shot.
Scene 2: Character introductory shot.

The camera is close to Maxine, and shots her challenger pulling up alongside her. This is the first time we see our protagonist’s face, introducing her character perfectly as a stoic old lady who doesn’t bother with the pettiness of her challenger. This scene also exacerbates Chad’s arrogance as we see the size of his vehicle compared to Maxine’s tiny little mobility scooter.

Scene 3: Character Introductory shot.
Scene 3: Character Introductory shot.

This is the scene where we see the face of trouble for the first time. Chad is arrogant and confident in his ability to be obnoxious. He immaturely sizes up Maxine.

Scene 4: Conflict Arising
Scene 4:
Conflict Arising

Though Maxine is obviously aloof to Chad’s presence, he revs his engine, heavily implying that he challenging her to a race.

Scene 5: Conflict Continues
Scene 5: Conflict Continues

Though aware of Maxine’s passiveness, Chad continues to rev his engine and prepare himself for what he believes will now be an “easy win”.

Scene 6: Situation changes
Scene 6: Situation changes

The traffic light changes and the train flies by out of the way. The road is now open and the two characters are ready to continue.

Scene 7: The Climax
Scene 7: The Climax

As the comedic twist, Maxine shoots away off down the road at the speed of sound, leaving Chad to stall his car and putter down to an embarrassing stop, all while being left in the dirt.

Scene 8: Epilogue (End Credits)
Scene 8: Epilogue (End Credits)

Maxine zooms away down the road towards the city, in almost exactly the same frame layout as the first shot.

However, the frames in this segment were flipped to follow the already existing line of action, and further served to show the power shift of the character, as it now looks like Maxine is on Chad’s side of the road, stealing his thunder.

Deleted Scene: Chad is left speechless and in awe.
