Instead of manually applying area lights, ambient occlusion automatically creates bounce lighting effects.

Light Linking

Using the relationship editor, I made it so the light that was affecting the sphere and cylinder did not effect the ground plane, and vice versa: the light affecting the ground plane did not effect the shapes.

Global Illumination

Final gathering added. Light and colour from the Image Based Lighting (IBL) is being reflected onto the surface of the shape.
Global Illumination + glow emmission from the IBL. The lower cylinder has been coloured red to emphasis the global illumination. The colour now shines on the lower parts of the sphere.
